Democracy in the Making:
Free Elections- the only way forward

The General Assembly Session of the Irano-British Chamber of Commerce, Industries, & Mines was held on Monday the 30th of Tir 1382 (21.07.2003) at 5:00 p.m. in the conference room at the ICCIM building in Tehran. This meeting was graciously attended by H.E. Mr. Richard Dalton, the British Ambassador to Iran and Mr. Graeme Thomas, First Secretary and Head of the British Embassy's Commercial and Economic Section.

Held at the end of the third biennial term of this chamber, which is the most active and dynamic joint chamber currently operating Iran, the purpose of the meeting was to review this chamber's activities over the past year and to elect it's new Executive Committee for its fourth biennial term.

During this meeting, which was held in a very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, the annual reports of the Executive Committee, the legal inspector and the Chamber's official auditor were read out and approved. The proposed budget for next year was also unanimously ratified.

Furthermore elections for the Fourth Biennial Executive Committee of the Irano-British Chamber were also carried out. Of the 40 candidates who ran in these elections for the new executive committee, 9 individuals were duly elected to the various positions on the Executive Committee according to the rules and regulations of the chamber in a truly democratic manner.

About one month later, on the 28th of Mordad 1382 (19.08.03), elections for the new Board of Delegates of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, and Mines, were held. 179 delegates representing the various local countrywide Chambers of Commerce associated with the ICCIM and 20 appointed members from Ministry of Commerce, Industries and Mines, elected seven members out of 179 representatives, for the next Executive Committee of ICCIM. The elected positions that were filled for the Fifth term of the ICCIM were for President, Deputy Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and Board Members.

There can be no doubt that the ICCIM with the help of its joint chambers as its executive branches, such as the Irano-British Chamber of Commerce, are aiming to achieve specific goals designed to regain the ICCIM's formerly held special position in the country's economic development process. In this effort they are trying their best to enhance and promote private sector development and to expand real foreign transactions in general.
